Our trip to Tandem was extremely enjoyable. It was an absolute pleasure to spend a week with our host families who were all welcoming, friendly and could not do enough to help us. The trip was a wonderful balance between education and culture.

The lessons given by the teachers at Tandem were engaging and most of all had a positive atmosphere which was in the large part down to the friendly personalities of the teachers, combined with their admirable knowledge and original teaching methods.

Clase de cocina española

The excursions in Madrid, whether it be to the picturesque views and character of the old capital or further afield to Toledo were all expertly planned and executed. Overall, the whole experience was both enjoyable and linguistically hugely beneficial – a never-to-be-forgotten experience.

Visita al Estadio Santiago Bernabeu

My own favourites, apart from getting to grips with the imperfect subjunctive, were the chance to see Real Madrid win at home, the Bernabeu stadium tour and an afternoon at a cookery school where we learnt how to make aubergines with honey, different types of paella and crème caramel. Mmm, I want to go back.

The Spanish Trip to Madrid was a great experience, improving our Spanish beyond recognition.

The host school, Escuela Tandem, is right in the heart of the city and was where our classes were to be based. On arrival we met our host families – worse than a blind date – who were to look after us for the week. We all struck it lucky as they really took care of us. On the first night we were taken to a karaoke bar where we performed songs in Spanish such as Angels by Robbie Williams. Fortunately no-one was listening. The next morning we all met at Escuela Tandem where we were introduced to our teachers, Natalia and Ruben, who taught us for the duration of our stay. However, one of us (Dylan Rose), made it to the lesson 40 minutes late, very red in the face, having been overcharged by a taxi driver and then fighting with him (verbally of course!). The afternoon was very interesting, as we visited the famous Prado museum. Led by our guide Sonia, we gained incredible insight into Spanish Art, especially the work of Goya.

Our 3rd Day in Madrid was spent in Toledo, the old capital of Spain; a beautiful city which is rich in culture. Once again Sonia was our guide and she expertly explained the various phases that Toledo has seen and the reasons as to why it was the capital of Spain. Our improving Spanish enabled us to haggle with a waiter in a restaurant, especially satisfying as he tried to rip us off! The highlight of the day, however, was the tour of Toledo on a road train, from which where we got to see how beautiful the whole city is.

Sunday (the next day) was split into three. First we visited the Madrid version of Portobello Market, called EL RASTRO, where we invested in tee-shirts with wonderfully inappropriate Spanish slogans. This market was incredible simply because it was so cheap and you could find all the tacky items that tourists want to buy! We then took the train from Atocha station to Alcala de Henares, birthplace of Cervantes and home to one of Spain’s most beautiful and prestigious universities. In the shadow of dreaming Spanish spires we watched the storks circling and ate our ice creams. The trip was worth it for those wonderfully relaxing moments alone.

Later on that day, back in Madrid, we went to El Parque Retiro, where we played football for a few hours and soaked up the late afternoon sun. Antonio Yoo managed to set a record by queuing 35 minutes for a toilet, or so he said. It may have been the ice cream.

Monday was perhaps the best day as after our morning classes, we went to the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, the home of Real Madrid, where we went through the museum, took many photos, acted like the team by running out from the tunnel, pretended to take questions during a press conference and bought clothes and football items from the megastore. All in all this was a great day and was topped off by a fantastic Madrid derby between Real and Atletico, which we watched in a restaurant.

Tuesday was our penultimate day, where we had classes in the morning and then free time to pack and roam around Madrid. Not being adventurous shoppers, we settled for El Top Man and Los Dunkin Donuts. I would be doing this report an injustice if I didn’t mention the fact that we had falafel sandwiches from the most incredible place called Maoz, every day! The best food we had in Spain! We regrouped at Escuela Tandem and were led to a restaurant where we were given cooking lessons. We learnt how to make paella, traditional omelettes (potato) and a dessert too. Over a hot cooker we got into a rowdy conversation with a German student about that night’s Manchester United vs. Bayern Munich game …of course Bayern won and we were humiliated but it was still a great night to end the trip on.

Our last day came to a close with two more classes, one with each teacher, with the group leaving straight after this to come back home. The two teachers, Ruben and Natalia were superb and taught us a variety of very useful things, ranging from some basic work on the first day, to in-depth descriptive phrases, to getting us to describe our favourite Spaniard in detail. The lessons were very relaxed and enjoyable, as both teachers paced them perfectly. Of course, there were some hilarious comments during the trip, one of which was Adam Talbot on the tube: “this is like the tube in London but the tube in London is ‘tubier’”. Actually, he’s right.

On behalf of Antonio Yoo, Adam Talbot, Mark Kelly and Dylan Rose, I would like to say a really big thank you to Mr. Simpson and Mrs. Thornber for giving up their free time to come with us.

As part of a school trip I spent 20 hours being taught some spine-tingling subjunctive, other pieces of articulate grammar and some extremely useful oral ideas at ‘La Escuela Tandem.’ On our immediate arrival we received folders outlining our housing and family information and we were picked up within moments by our family. The atmosphere in the car ride up to the school had been very eerie, but this was quashed on arrival due to the friendly and warm atmosphere of the people in the school and the magnificent school building itself. The families were all so welcoming in their own different ways. I was lucky enough to stay in some fantastic accommodation, only 10 minutes away from the school which was ideal.

In the mornings from 9.30am through to 1pm we were taught Spanish by two phenomenal teachers, Juan and Belen. They were so energetic and eager to get us involved and this shone through in some exquisite Spanish phrases we came up with, all of which were extremely useful to us for our exams. Also it was ideal to practice our listening skills and to communicate with a proper Spanish local. We studied themes such as family and relationships, media and popular culture. I can speak on behalf of my friends when I say it was without doubt extremely useful and enjoyable.

We saw all of the El Greco, Velázquez, Goya, Picasso, and Miró displays in both the Prado Museum and the Reina Sofia and they were captivating and I speak on behalf of the school group when I say it was much more enjoyable than expected. What’s more, our guide Sonia certainly enjoyed talking about each of the pieces and this shone through as she threw massive amounts of information at us in such a small frame of time, which made the trip even more worthwhile! It was Sonia again who was our guide when we visited Toledo, the old capital of Spain, by the AVE high speed train. Toledo was picture-perfect and its beauty shone down with the beaming sun. There were hundreds of picturesque buildings, which dare I say would rival the architectural genius of Gaudi in Barcelona? The organization was superb and we all had a fantastic time.

Back in Tandem we also took part in a clown class with a Basque actor called ‘Axon’. It was a big hit with all of the boys and all our throats were sore after having to scream and growl like a samurai warrior!

On behalf of The Manchester Grammar School I would like to extend our gratitude to ‘La Escuela Tandem’ for all their hard work and effort in designing a perfect package for each individual. I would thoroughly recommend it!’

It was a chilly night in Madrid as a group of exhausted, yet ecstatic students made their way out of Barajas international airport. A 7 hour flight might have drained their energies, but not their spirits, as their excitement was clearly visible.

The 11th of December to the 21st December saw the departure of 11 AJA students accompanied by Miss Carmen and Ms Lynn on an unforgettable trip to Spain. The trip served as an exemplar on how education and fun can collaborate on such a level. The purpose of the trip was to attend lessons at Tandem Madrid, an international school of language based in the city. Moreover students also took part in numerous activities, ranging from hiking, to cooking and theatre. These activities were designed specifically to enhance spoken Spanish and also to serve as CAS for the IB students.

The trip was unique as it gave students the opportunity to live like Spaniards. Literally. Students were housed with Spanish host families which therefore put their Spanish skills to the ideal test. We were required to communicate entirely in Spanish, be it in the “metro” (subway), at school or simply dining at a restaurant. And the progress made by some us was quite remarkable. Students who had never studied Spanish were, at the end of the trip, able to communicate on a basic level.

What posed as a challenge for a lot of us was the fact that the level of responsibility given to us had certainly increased. However, this responsibility, rather than being a burden, became an adventure. We were required wake up, and get prepared accordingly, in order to reach the school everyday at 9:00. The school was located conveniently in the heart of Madrid, near Sol. The various methods of transportation in the city meant that it wasn’t difficult getting around. However the best way to travel was definitely through the Metro.

The afternoons were filled by activities organized by Ms Carmen. The first of many was a memorable hiking trip to Cercedilla. What came as a surprise to all of us was the fact that by the time we reached the mountain trail, it had begun to snow. The mountains and trees that were once lush green were now coated white with snowfall. All of us were treated to nature at its best, and more so for the ones who were seeing snow for the first time.

The second part of the trip constituted of a two night stay in Cordoba which is recognized by some, as the cultural hub of Europe. Cordoba served as an absolute transition from Madrid. It’s tranquility, labyrinth of winding, narrow streets, shady flower-filled courtyards and picturesque squares such as La Plaza del Potro turned out to be a stark contrast of Madrid.

The trip ended too early, and it was on the 22nd when students made their way back to Doha. A cultural, environmental and memorable experience in summary, the trip illustrated on how beneficial such trips can be on accounts of both academic and extra- curricular activities. On behalf of all that took part in the trip, I would like to thank Ms Lyn, and Ms Carmen for planning and organizing the entire trip for the second year in a row.
